Volleyball II
Day: Tuesday
Time: 7pm-10.00pm
General House Rules:
- Participants are expected to be in the gym by 6.55 PM to properly
set up the nets and warm up before the start of the play. Play will
start no later than 7.05 PM every Tuesday night. Each team will
designate a person to stay at the end of night to bring the score sheets and
other equipment to central place in Gymnasium # 2 (Old Gym).
If ANY equipment
is left behind at any net at the end of the night, each team that played on
that court/net will be assigned one additional loss for the night. Nets will
be put up and taken down by the school staff.
- Indoor men’s USVBA (six player) rules will apply (with some exceptions)
even when less than six players are present on a court. Minimum 4 players are required to play a game. One female player must be on
court at all times to play an official game. If a team that is
scheduled to play doesn’t have required number of players, they have
three options.
- To referee (end to end) scheduled games between other two teams (, until they have
required players or until the other two teams have played 6 official games as
per schedule, whichever comes first. In this case the team with not
enough players will be assigned a maximum of 4 losses (or less if they are
able to put up a team after say 2 or three forfiets) from forfeits for
the night. In this case the other two teams will promptly start playing at
7.05 pm and continue until they have played 6 games. The teams with required
players will be assigned a maximum of 2 wins against the forfieting team. At the end of 6
official games, unofficial games can be played between three teams as per
schedule. If a team is unable or refuses to provide referees , the other two teams will
play their scheduled games (min 6 official games) using honor refereeing.
After 6 official games without a referee both teams can continue to play
official games if both captains agree to do so. Either of the two captains has
a right to refuse to play an official game after the minimum required number
of games have been played. The team that fails to provide referees will
forfeit each scheduled game to the maximum of 6 games in a night. Opposing
teams will be assigned a win (3 wins max) for every forfeited game.
- Second option is to play the scheduled games with team with less than
required play. In this case, there is no maximum # of games that can be lost.
Even if the team with less players win they will be assigned a loss. Total #
of losses for that team will be equal to total number of games played with
less than required players during the night
- If a team doesn't have a female present on court,
they can still play an official game as long as they keep only 4 male players
on the court. They can have other players rotate in but no more than 4
players should be playing in the absence of a female player. (This
option should be used sparingly. Deliberate and frequent use of this option
may be considered an abuse of league rules).
In the unlikely event that all games scheduled on the scoring sheet have
been played more than 10 minutes before 10 PM, the teams scheduled to play at
the top of scoring sheet automatically become next officially scheduled (write
in the results) to play. The non playing team must stay to referee and other
teams must play unless the two playing captains decide otherwise. If one of
the teams on the net fails to put up a team or referees in such a case, two losses
will be assigned to that team’s record while giving other teams on net one win
each. No official game will be played in such case.
- Working team will provide an up and a down referee and line judges. Only
captains can confer with referee about a controversial call and main referee’s
decision is final. If there is any dispute concerning rules, the three
captains on the net should try to resolve first before taking it further.
No
arguments between the players Please.
- Normally, three teams will be assigned per net and they will
play according to the schedule provided until 10 PM. All games started 8 mins
before 10 PM will be completed even if it gets past 10 PM. No game will start
after 9.52. All teams on a net that starts a game after 9.52 will be assigned
a loss for the night, All games are to 21 points. A team must hold 2 point advantage to win
with 23 point cap.
When two teams are assigned on a net, the teams will play
scheduled games (minimum 8) using honor refereeing. All the games on the net
with 2 teams will be 21 points games with no shortened games.
- There will be no more than a 3 minute warm up before the start of new
game.
- Only one attempt to serve is allowed. Dropping the ball, unless instructed
to, after the whistle will result in a side out. All players except server must
be fully on the court and not touching any boundary lines when ball is served.
If the ball being served comes in contact with ceilings, beams, or any other
Fixed off court object, except rings in the old gymnasium, it will
result in a side
out. Since there is not lot of room behind the court, stepping on the
court at the time of contact with the ball would not be considered a foot
fault as long as the server initiates clearly off the court .In case a serve is executed before referee’s whistle, the referee must allow
another chance to serve.
- The serve may not be blocked or aggressively attacked above the net. If
any part of the ball is below the top of the net, any contact, however
aggressive it may seem, is not an attack.
- The play ball is considered dead if it touches the surrounding
walls. Play ball off the ceiling or beams is fair as long as it has not
crossed the plane of net. This applies to the middle Beam in old gym also
except in case where the direction of the ball is changed due to the presence
of beam. For example, if the ball hits on the inside of the beam and is
redirected back into the court without crossing the plane, the ball will be
considered dead. However if the ball hits the bottom of the beam or
touches inside of the beam while going straight up, and still stays on the
court without breaking the plane, its a fair ball and can be played. Ball
contact with the following off or on court intruding objects during a rally
may require (except in case of a serve unless specifically noted otherwise
below) a replay at the discretion of the referee:
- Rubber Rings (almost always replay including serve) or their
extensions in Gym # 2
- Back and side basketball Boards/hoops
- Raised Basketball Boards in Gym # 1 (New Gym)
Basiacally, if the ball is playable without touching the sidewalls etc. , the
referee may allow replay.
9. The ball may be played with any part of the body.
Deliberate kicking of the ball (dead ball or in play) is not allowed at any time inside the gym
and may result in a side out. If the referee feels that the ball was hit with a
sole intent of kicking it, including in case of out of frustration, desperation
etc., whether during a rally or after, he/she may order a side out. Criteria for
such decision is based on intent and not whether a person lifted their foot off
the ground to help the ball up or not. The referee must order a side out in case
of a repeated kicking behavior of a particular individual.
10. A player may not :
- Touch the net with any part of the body. (Incidental contact with hair, clothing etc.
is OK)
- Cross over to the other court under the net. ( Stepping on centerline is
not crossing over)
- Interfere with opposing player under the net.
- Hit (offensive move) the ball before it has crossed the plane of the net.
- Reach over the net to block unless three contacts, on opponents side, have
been completed or the referee finds that no obstruction in play was caused by
penetration. Under no circumstances the ball will be hit before it has broken
the plane of the net.
- make deliberate noise or gestures with a sole objective to interfere in
the play on the opponents side.
- receive the ball with open hands unevenly at anytime (except when
receiving a serve or a hard driven ball, almost anything except a
redirect or throw is allowed in such cases)
- allow the ball to come to complete rest while setting or reacting to
rebound off the net.
11. When two team mates touch a ball simultaneously, it is considered one
contact. Either of the two players involved may make the next contact.
12. A joust over the net between two players of opposing team is legal and
point will be decided depending on where the ball drops.
13. Two handed spikes are double hits and declared a fault.
14. Let or Net serve is permitted.
15. Players on court should not have any jewelry on their person while
playing.
16. Captains are responsible for recording scores. All protests or rule
clarifications have to be brought to our attention before v'ball is over for the
night or immediately thereafter. No next day or email protests will be
entertained.
17. New Balls (if provided) must not be used for warm ups. Anyone who
doesn’t like to warm up with other balls provided, may bring their own as long
as they bear their names. School will not be responsible for lost or misplaced
personal balls. NO ONE IS PERMITTED TO ENTER THE STORAGE AREA AND TOUCH OR USE
ANY EQUIPMENT.
18. The teams will play according to the team assignments provided . There
are no play offs. The cumulative total of wins and losses over the whole session
will determine winners.
General rules:
- Please don’t walk around other courts or open gym doors, while a rally is
in progress.
- Please don’t walk through the door between old and the new gym once
official games have started. Use the outer doors if you must.

has been played as long as he/she doesn't completely (same as middle

to the back and side walls. The player has to play the ball before he/she
comes in contact with the wall. He/she can't take assistance of the wall to
play the ball.
- A team that is unable to field a team will be assigned a maximum of 5 forfiets for the night. If a team is able to field a team by 7PM and 9 PM (as
